Automotive Wire Harness Design Checklist for OEM Buyers

Automotive wire harness design starts with the vehicle function, installation space, current load and service environment. A clear drawing reduces sampling changes and helps the supplier quote tooling, materials and assembly cost more accurately.

OEM buyers should confirm connector locking method, terminal plating, wire gauge, jacket material, branch length, protection sleeve and label requirements before production. For outdoor or engine-area routing, sealing and strain relief should be reviewed early.

A good RFQ package normally includes connector part numbers, mating parts, pinout, target quantity, test standard and packaging requirements.

Engineering Checklist

  • Confirm connector series, mating part number and pin count before sampling.
  • Define wire gauge, cable jacket, routing space, bend radius and environmental exposure.
  • Provide a drawing, sample, wiring table or pinout so production and inspection requirements are clear.
